Boating in Varanasi

Location for Boating: Dashashwamedha Ghat, Assi Ghat, Meer Ghat, Man Mandir Ghat

Best Time for Boating: Early morning, say around 5.30 am when it is cool.

Boating in Varanasi is a unique experience by itself especially in the morning. The boatman rows the boat along River Ganga and you hear the sound of water being cut through along with temple bells at the Ghats. The view of the Ghats from River Ganga during boat ride is awesome. A boat trip along the Ganges allows for unmatched views of the Ghats, when pilgrims bathe, practice yoga, pray and meditate. The best time to make the trip is early morning, say around 5.30 am when it is cool, the early morning light is particularly inspiring when all the colour and clamour of pilgrims bathing and performing puja discloses before you. An hour long trip from Dashashwamedha Ghat to Harishchandra Ghat and back is very popular. Evening is also a good time for boating on River Ganga, when you can light a lotus flower candle and set it adrift on the water. The best way to end your evening boat ride is to watch Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedha Ghat directly from you boat. If you prefer longer boat trip then opt for motor boat. One can go up to Ramnagar Fort by motor boat. Oar boats may also go up to there but it will take at least 3 hours.

There are different types of boats for hiring such as manually oared, motored boat, personal boat or shared boat. Boats can be rented at many Ghats such as Dashashwamedha Ghat, Assi Ghat, Meer Ghat, Man Mandir Ghat. The boats are rented on hourly basis and may also be rented as per your requirement. As of June,2013; a manually oared boat from Dashashwamedha Ghat to Harishchandra Ghat and then back to Dashashwamedha Ghat via Manikarnika Ghat had cost five hundred rupees for a duration of about seventy five minutes. Since the prices for these boats are highly negotiable, we suggest to bargain directly with the boatman and be patient but firm. If you are good at bargaining then you might end up paying almost 3-4 times of the demand. Boating can best be enjoyed on manually oared boat since it moves slowly and gives provides you enough opportunity to view the Ghats, Temples etc. on the serenely flowing river. You can always try your hand on rowing and happily relieve the boatman from his hard work for brief time.
