Local Transport

Auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are the most widely available public transport within old city. In outer regions of the city, city-buses are common, and taxis are also available.

Private taxis are available from travel agencies, hotels, etc. Auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are readily available. On some routes specially the old Varanasi areas of Temples and markets, one way traffic is maintained. And on those routes auto rickshaws or big vehicles are not permitted. Tourist should be aware on hiring private vehicles. Usually cars/taxis/four wheelers are charged for 4,8,12 hours or for full day, with kilometer limit inside city, for 8 hours the rate is between Rs. 500-1000 for 4 seated cars. The rate of reserved auto rickshaw about Rs.5 per km. Tourists are advised to fix-up the fair before travelling.

The most widely used local transport systems are the cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws. Traveller also have the option of mini-buses and river steamers. Cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws are available at street corners. The prices are negotiable and the auto rickshaws may not be metered. Cycles rickshaws are cheap and good option for short distances.

Mini buses stop every kilometer and they are cheap. They charge around Rs 35 from one end of the city to the other end.

River steamer and small boats are used to cross the Ganga River. They usually cost around Rs 100 per trip.
